Introduction:
Digital black & white imaging has entered a new era. Lyson's Daylight Darkroom System provides photographers what they have long desired - the ability to accurately mirror traditional darkroom techniques, including silver halide printing, with digital images and an inkjet printer. This new system Incorporates True Monochrome Print Software along with Lyson Daylight Darkroom Quad Black Inks, and Lyson Darkroom Paper. The results of this system are simply stunning. This statement has been confirmed by virtually every photographic eye that has examined them.

• Print Pro Printer Driver:
As well as all the features of a standard print driver, it also has extras such as image sizing and rotation, and even a print preview screen so you can accurately track your adjustments. The driver also gives complete control over every ink channel on the printer to provide absolute continuous tone printing. The way in which the printer driver and ink system work together means that the printer is using a minimum of four shades of black and a maximum of seven shades at any one time during printing.

• Profile Creator:
This can accept two different profiles which, can be blended together in infinite combinations - great for fine tuning the final appearance of the image. The user can also create or edit their own profiles for use with Print Pro using simple test target prints. The software comes complete with warm, neutral and cool profiles for the full range of Lyson paper. Linearization of profiles can also be achieved by using a standard flat bed scanner.

The drawbacks of using a standard Pint Diver for this type of printing It that it is virtually impossible to produce a quality monochrome print using a standard print driver with CMYK inks. This is because balancing levels of black in a monochromatic image is extremely difficult to manage. The fact remains that colour defects are usually present within the grayscale; e.g. if a neutral black is realised for shadow detail, magenta or cyan often creeps into the mid-tones resulting in a black and white print that's no where near correct. Lyson have recently set the standard of black and white imaging with the introduction of the Small Gamut Black and White Inkset but with the recent introduction of seven and now eight colour ink jet models coupled with the new printer driver to fully ulilise the extra channels, Lyson have made it possible to achieve even more levels of grey and toning effects.

Paper and Longevity:
We have discovered the best papers for this system is the Darkroom Range. Our results show the darkroom semi gloss and the darkroom matte papers mimic high end fiber based silver prints and provide a finished result which, upuntil now, has been deemed not possible with inkjet printing. Print longevity tests have not yet been finalised but early indications are that longevity is likely to far exceed the currently 100+ years indoor display life for the full range of Lyson papers.
