Sample cover evaluation using a domestic iron
(evaluation only – not for production)
Instructions
Thank you for requesting a Marrutt Photobook demo cover, which gives you the opportunity to evaluate our quality leather-look Photobook inkjet binding system, available in highly durable luxurious white or black leather effect.
Also available is a Unibind creaser, as well as a facility to customise your Photobook by gold or silver hot-foil blocking.
There are two formats of Photobooks available at present; A4 landscape, which accommodates a standard A4 inkjet printed page, normal text printed page, or even a photographic print – so long as the overall size is A4 L/S. The other format is 300mm x 300mm square, designed to accept A3 landscape printed pages trimmed back to 308mm width. This allows for a pleasing page size which undercuts the Photobook cover by just over 5mm.
Single-sided inkjet prints, Double sided inkjet prints, Photographs, Artwork, even collage art – so long as the page is of the correct overall size to fit neatly inside the Photobook cover, this binding system will show off your work to the best possible advantage.
Images may be bleed, inset, montage or even index print style. You can be as creative as you like; mix colour and monochrome, insert text pages, even examples of commercially printed work. Wedding photographers may include all manner of two-dimensional mementos of the occasion, such as invitations, menu cards, order of church service, confetti – even locks of hair mounted in a clear pouch adhered to a page!
Evaluate the system using a domestic iron (not recommended for production)
Collate your collection of pages neatly together, ensuring all edges are accurately lined up. Ensure that you have enough pages to adequately fill the spine of the Photobook, without over-filling. Generally, between 5 and 20 average thickness inkjet pages is a good guide.
Insert your collated pages into your Photobook cover, making sure you achieve an even overlap on three sides, and that your pages are fully entered into your Photobook spine.
Using a domestic iron on medium heat (not steam), apply the iron directly to the underside of the spine of the cover for around 30 seconds. The internal metal spine will soak up the heat, and activate the hot melt glue inside the spine of the cover. Allow the binder to fully cool down. For thicker pages (over 90gsm) repeat the heating cycle to ensure that the heat binding process thoroughly infuses your page edges. After these two cycles, leave the Photobook to cool – do not open the cover until it is completely cold. – This method allows you to ‘mock up’ a Photobook. This method is not guaranteed to give you a reliable heat bind, but will at least allow you to evaluate the ‘look’ without the expense of buying a dedicated heat binder: Show your finished presentation to your customers and friends – see the reaction.
You may edit your Photobook by re-heating the spine, take out the page to be discarded, and quickly insert the new page. Repeat the heat binding process above, allow to cool thoroughly.
To achieve a ‘lay-flat’ appearance to your pages, simply score a fold line around 8mm in from the inner edge of each page. A Unibind creaser is available to carry this out in volume.
A Marrutt Professional Inkjet Photobook may be gold/silver hot foil customised to your own requirements; your studio logo, web site address, telephone number etc. Event photobooks which commemorate a particular person, institution, anniversary or event look so much better with a personalised cover.
